From Dreamer to Doer: Conquering Mardi Himal as a First-Time Trekker

The mountains have always been close to my heart and the Mardi Himal Trek strengthened that connection. Filled with excitement and hope, our ten adventurers started trekking to Mardi Himal from Kande after an hour’s drive from Pokhara. From there, we hiked to Deurali, where we spent time acclimatizing to the altitude of 2125 meters. We had some idea this trek would not only our physical ability but also our capacity to adapt to the unpredictable conditions of high altitude. We were excited to witness the beauty of the Annapurna Conservation Area.
On the second day of our journey to Low Camp (3,150 meters), we got to see the gorgeous blend of vivid rhododendron trees, flourishing green hills, and panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. We could feel the effects of the altitude on our bodies by the time we reached Low Camp. As we ascended to High Camp at 3,700 meters the next day, the landscape drastically changed. Even though we were all suffering from headaches and shortness of breath due to the steep rise and altitude, our spirits remained high. We gathered around the campfire in High Camp, telling each other tales of our previous adventures and our hopes for reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp.

Our headlamps lit the steep, narrow trail as we began the hike in the early morning hours. We took a 250 mg dose of acetazolamide to aid with the altitude. Every step was difficult because of the thin air, and four from our group had to quit on the way because of mild headaches and dyspnea, leaving the other six of us to continue. As we continued our journey, one of our female trekkers suddenly stopped, unable to bend her leg due to intense discomfort. Each step became painful, and it was clear she couldn’t continue. With five of us left, we were determined to make it to base camp.
I was amazed by the stunning Annapurna range and the towering Machhapuchhre upon arriving at base camp. It was an emotional moment, filled with joy and sadness. When we reunited with our group at High Camp and shared our stories, I realized that this trek had tested us in unexpected ways and created lasting memories and connections. The Mardi Himal Trek taught me that success isn’t just about climbing to the top but also about making good decisions and encouraging one another.
